Healthy Vegan Caramel Sauce: This two ingredient caramel sauce is pure decadence in healthy form. (gluten free, dairy free, egg free, vegan, nut free, soy free, corn free, refined sugar free and oil free)
Through my high school and college years I worked as a waitress at a retirement home. One of my favorite things about the job was the VIP access to the dessert bar. It turns out that the elderly really go all out with their dessert. Imagine looking out upon a never-ending sea of desserts. The options were endless, as was my sweet tooth. In the spirit of trying to keep up with the old folks, I had a caramel and chocolate sauce sundae every night. And let me tell you, it was creamy, dreamy, to die for.
Nowadays the caramel craving comes to get me every so often. And when it does I’m armed and ready with this recipe. It’s simple to make; only requires one pan and two ingredients. It’s much healthier than a traditional caramel sauce and let me tell you it has the perfect texture to boot. I love to dip a crisp, sweet apple in this sauce or drizzle it over my favorite vanilla ice cream with chocolate, just like the good old days.
My caramel sauce is gluten free, dairy free, egg free, vegan, nut free, soy free, corn free, refined sugar free and oil free (except naturally occurring oil in tahini). It is so dog gone delicious you will be eating it morning, noon & night. Yes, I had it for breakfast this morning.
Healthy Vegan Caramel Sauce
A decadent plant based caramel sauce made with feel good ingredients. This sauce pairs perfectly with a sliced crisp apple. It is gluten free, dairy free, egg free, vegan, nut free, soy free, corn free, oil free and refined sugar free.
- 1 cup tahini roasted, unsalted
- 1 cup pure maple syrup I use grade A
Pour tahini and maple syrup into a small pan.
Heat over medium-low heat and stir frequently. Ingredients will begin to combine but still look slightly grainy (like tahini). Keep on stove until color darkens from a light tahini brown to a slightly darker caramel brown. Sauce should appear smooth in texture. If you aren’t sure if it’s done or not then taste test it. It should have a caramel after taste. If it does not, keep cooking.
Remove from stove. Pour into a bowl and put in refrigerator until completely cool. The caramel texture will go from runny to a perfectly sticky caramel sauce once refrigerated and the flavor will enhance dramatically.
